Last week the secretary-general of Rodrigo Duterte’s political party announced the current sitting President of the Philippines will run for a Senate seat in 2022. The announcement came as a shock since earlier in November, Duterte announced he was retiring from politics.
Last Saturday, Duterte made it official by filing for his Senate run just before the deadline. His filing came the day after his press secretary said President Duterte intended to run for vice president against his daughter Sara Duterte.
Sara Duterte Vice Presidency Announcement
Sara Duterte has been considered a front-runner in the 2022 Presidential election primarily because she is the daughter of current President Rodrigo Duterte. However, last week she filed to run for Vice President just moments before Ferdinand Marcos Jr. registered for President in 2022.
Soon after Marcos filed for President in 2022, he announced that Sara Duterte-Carpio would be his vice president pick. For many political analysts, this came as a surprise because Sara led the opinion polls throughout the year as a top pick for President.
Who Is Ferdinand Marcos Jr?
Ferdinand Marcos Jr., commonly known as Bongbong, is the second son of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. Marco’s Sr. was first elected to the office of the President in 1965 and served until 1986.
Bongbong was born in 1957, so he got to grow up and see his father in office. Marcos Jr. finally stepped into politics in 1980 when they became the vice-governor of Ilocos Norte.
