This weekend mixed martial arts fans will finally get what they have been waiting on when Khabib Nurmagomedov battles Dustin Poirier in UFC 242.

This is Kahbib’s first fight back in the octagon since he destroyed Conor McGregor in UFC 229. We all remember how that one ended with talks of suspensions and Khabib possible getting banned from the sport. Almost a year later he will step into the ring to defend his championship belt.

Dusitn Poirier has a professional record of 25-5 and wasn’t considered one of the elite top lightweights coming into 2019. However, he was on a winning streak and after he beat Max Holliday by decision, he earned his shot at the Lightweight title. Max Holliday had to gain weight and go up a weight class to fight Poirier but would have been handed the same opportunity if he would have won the fight.

Poirier fought 22 fights before he was named the interim champion. Only one other fighter has ever fought more fights before getting a title shot; Michael Bisping.

Khabib has a professional UFC record of 27-0 with 8 KO’s and 9 submissions. He is the current lightweight champion. This will be his first fight back since he ended the Conor McGregor reign. However, there are rumors swirling that the winner of this fight could end up paired with McGregor for his return to the UFC.
