The Philippines Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez told media sources that the Philippines has several candidates who could break the countries 95-year-old gold medal drought at the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Commissioner Ramirez mentioned 19-year-old gymnast Carlos Yulo as his favorite athlete to break the streak. Yulo was born in Manila, Philippines, but currently trains in Tokyo. He is the first male and first Southeast Asian gymnast to win the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. He’s won gold in the men’s floor exercise event. Yulo has also already secured his spot in the 2020 Summer Olympics by ranking 18th out of 160 gymnasts in the men’s category. Below you can see some of his skills.

Two days later, another Filipino made headlines when she won the gold medal at the 2019 AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championship in Russia. Nesthy Petecio was born in Davao City, Philippines, and took up boxing at the age of 7. Below you can see her big win over Russian Liudmila Vorontsova.

Other Philippine gold medal hopefuls include pole vault athlete Ernest John Obiena, weightlifting athlete Hidilyn Diaz, and boxing middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial.

In 2016 the Philippines sent 13 athletes to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and brought home a silver medal in weightlifting. Hidilyn Diaz made history by ending the countries 20 year no Olympic medal drought. Before her win in 2016, the last Filipino to earn an Olympic medal was Mansueto Velasco Jr, a flyweight boxer who also took home a silver medal.

Betting on the Olympics is similar to betting on other sports but with more categories to choose from. Some of the more popular games to bet on during the Summer Olympics include Basketball, Boxing, Track, and Soccer.

In the Philippines, there are multiple ways that bettors can bet on the action. MegaSportsWorld is a domestic sportsbook with hundreds of locations around the islands. While they are restricted to only allow betting on sporting events outside of the Philippines, the Olympics is the perfect opportunity for the sportsbook to offer lines on domestic teams and athletes.

Offshore sportsbooks or mobile sportsbooks are other options where Philippine residents can legally place bets on the Olympics. In most cases, offshore sportsbooks offer the most favorable lines and more betting options as opposed to traditional domestic sportsbooks.

For now, there are no betting lines on the 2020 Summer Olympics, but when they come available, we will share them on our site. Until then, multiple national and international sports can be bet on, including esports, American baseball, American basketball, and more.
