Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos has created an inter-agency task force in preparation for the 2023 FIBA International Basketball Federation World Cup.
On March 27th, Administrative Order No. 5 was signed by President Marcos, enacting the new task force. The order also calls on local governments to support the Samahang Basketbol ng Philippines (SBP), the national sports association for basketball in the Philippines.
The new task force will be led by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair Dickie Bachmann who will lead streamlining and initiating all government efforts and program plans. Bachmann told the media that “the successful organization and hosting of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 requires the involvement, coordination, and support of all concerned government agencies, local government units, and the private sector.
FIBA Basketball World Cup Details
The 2023 FIBA World Cup will be held in Manila, Philippines, and will take place from August 25th to September 10th. For the first time in history, the tournament will be hosted by three countries Indonesia, Japan, and the Philippines.
The 2023 FIBA World Cup will serve as a qualifying tournament for the 2024 Summer Olympics. The two top teams will qualify alongside those from the Americas/Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. France will also be eligible for the Olympic basketball tournament since it hosts the 2024 Olympics. Spain will also automatically qualify since they won the 2019 final.
