In his first public comments since the stunning loss, Ronaldo told the media that it is time to take stock of his 19-year career with Portugal and that his dream of winning the World Cup for his country is over. In an Instagram post, Ronaldo stated that winning the World Cup for his country was the most ambitious dream of his career. Ronaldo went on to explain how he fought for his dream of hoisting the World Cup for Portugal and that he gave it his all each time he played for the World Cup.

Christiano Ronaldo only scored one goal in the five games Portugal played in the 2022 tournament, and as a result, he was benched by manager Fernando Santos. Ronaldo being removed from the starting lineup caused many fans to get upset, but his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez, took it especially hard and vented to social media.
