A powerhouse team of 47 Filipino athletes is set to compete in the 12th World Games in Chengdu, China, from August 7 to 17. The delegation, led by Wushu standout Agatha Wong, Wakeboarding champion Raph Trinidad, and Billiards icon Rubilen Amit, marks the largest Philippine contingent in the history of the Games, according to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
The World Games spotlight sports not featured in the Olympics and have been held since 1981. So far, the Philippines has earned two golds, five silvers, and five bronzes in previous editions.
POC President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino expressed optimism for a stronger performance this year compared to the last Games in Birmingham, where Junna Tsukii secured the country’s sole gold in karate. In 2017, billiards star Carlo Biado also clinched gold in Wroclaw, Poland.
Wong and Trinidad have been chosen as flag bearers for the opening ceremony at the Tianfu International Convention Center. Wong, a five-time SEA Games champion and two-time world silver medalist, will compete in Women’s Taolu Taijiquan bare hands and sword. She qualified for the Games after winning silver at the 2023 World Wushu Championships in Texas.
“This is my first time at the World Games, and I’m truly honored to represent the country,” Wong shared during a send-off event at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
