The 2022 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioners Cup Conference tournament is underway, and the Magnolia Hotshots (4-0) are leading the power rankings after winning their first four games; behind them, with only one loss, is the Bay Area Dragons (4-1).
After two weeks of action, the Magnolia Hotshots and the Bay Area Dragons have a solid lead on other clubs participating in the tournament. However, there is still a long road ahead of the two clubs as each team has eight more tournament games throughout the next couple of months.
Magnolia improves to 4-0 and remains the only unbeaten team in the PBA behind another big game from Nick Rakocevic. #PBA https://t.co/mZSfRKOU8w

PBA Commissioners Cup Origins
The PBA Commissioners Cup was first played in 1993 and was intended to be the PBA’s second competition. In 2003 the tournament was discontinued and replaced by the Invitational Championship. In 2011 the PBA decided it was time to return to three conference tournaments each year, and the PBA Commissioners Cup replaced the Invitational Championship.
The 2022 PBA Commissioners Cup will be the 20th time the tournament will be played. Last year the conference tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019 the San Miguel Beerman walked away with the Commissioners Cup trophy.
Commissioners Cup Format
Each year for the PBA Commissioners Cup, teams are allowed to import a single foreign player to their club to help them win the conference. However, some restrictions to the foreign players allowed to compete in the tournament, including a height restriction. The 2022 height restriction for foreign players is 6 foot 10 inches, but the height restriction has changed many times over the tournament’s history.
Each team participating in the tournament will have to play 12 games from September to early 2023. Teams are then seeded by their win-loss record, and the top 8 teams will advance to the quarterfinals.
