Filipina tennis sensation Alex Eala saw her run at the WTA 250 Japan Open come to an end after a straight-sets defeat to Czech star Tereza Valentova in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
Valentova, just 18 years old, delivered a commanding performance to dispatch Eala with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. From the outset, the Czech teenager asserted her dominance, breaking Eala’s serve twice to race to a 3-0 lead in the first set. Despite Eala managing to get on the scoreboard with a few well-placed forehands, Valentova’s consistent first serves and aggressive groundstrokes kept her firmly in control, allowing her to close out the opening set with relative ease.
Currently ranked No. 78 in the WTA rankings, Valentova entered the main draw after topping the qualifying rounds, where she overcame Belgium’s Greet Minnen in a three-set battle (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) and cruised past Russia’s Alina Charaeva (6-1, 6-2). Her victory over Eala adds to an already impressive 2025 season, improving her win-loss tally to 43–11.
In the second set, Valentova maintained her momentum, using her wide serves to open up the court and dictate play from the baseline. Eala showed flashes of brilliance, particularly during a spirited service hold that featured a sharp volley winner to make it 3-1. However, the Czech teen quickly regained control, capitalizing on unforced errors from Eala and sealing the match with another dominant stretch of play.
