The University of the Philippines (UP) won its first football game in season 87 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). After a dismal loss to UST in game one of the season, UP has bounced back with a 3-0 win in game two against Adamson University.
Rookie Joseph Graces led the team, scoring the first goal of the season in the fourth minute of the competition. After the first goal, Season 86 rookie of the year Ramil Bation scored in the 81st minute. Florenz Tacardon finished up the scoring with a header in stoppage time, bringing the score to 3-0.
After the game, the Fighting Maroons head coach, Popoy Clarino, stated, “It’s perfect to have the boys get back on track. It’s a long road; we want to take it one game at a time. Right before the season started, we lost Francis Tacardon, but regardless of that, ang lagi naming sinasabi sa kanila, it’s always an opportunity for one person to step up. Anyone can be a team leader; becoming one takes guts and courage.”
Clarino stated, “Joseph played the way we wanted him to. He’s a rookie, but given the exposure and time, he could be one of our main players here in the university.”
