The 2023 Southeast Asian Games will be the 32nd installment of the Olympic-style games. The games will include events and athletes from 11 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
The 2023 SEA Games will take place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, May 5th-16th. This upcoming year’s competition is the first time Cambodia will host the games, and it is customary for the host country to choose the sporting competitions. Previously Cambodia was offered to host the 3rd SEAP Games in 1963 but was unable to host the event due to the political situation in the country at the time.
Originally the Philippines was supposed to host the 2023 Games, but after Brunei withdrew its hosting privileges for 2019, the Philippines was moved up to 2019.
Now that Cambodia has control of the upcoming competition, they plan to play 49 sports and 632 events, a new record for the SEA Games. Several members of the SEAG Federation do not agree with all the latest additions.
New Additions Proposed For 2023
Cambodia is looking to add 30 events in Vovinam, 24 events in Martial Arts Korea, and 13 in Dragonboat.
The Philippine Olympic Committee president and Representative Abraham Tolentino told the media that if all these games are allowed in the competitions, it will be the biggest SEA Games ever; however, the POC is expected to contest the new additions.
