In the sport of surfing, there is not much more to strive for other than Olympic gold medals and winning competitions; however, Filipino surfer Roger Casugay was just awarded the prestigious “Pierre de Coubertin Act of Fair Play Award” (CIFP) for saving fellow surfer Arip Nurhidayat (Indonesia) from drowning at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Roger Casugay is already a decorated surfer in the eyes of many, being one of the few surfers from the Philippines who was selected to represent his country at the 2019 SEA Games. At the age of 26, he is now a recognized hero for his heroic act of saving his competitor.

During the 2019 SEA surfing competition, Rodger was favored to win gold on his last wave before he dived to save Arip Nurhidayat. After his heroic action, judges decided to re-run his attempt, where he was awarded the gold for the 2019 SEA surfing competition.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Ramirez recently commented on the events that took place. He said, “We are very proud of Roger because he has truly exemplified the true meaning of being a Filipino and a sportsman.”

Roger Casugay will accept his CIFP award on October 25, 2020. Given the circumstances surrounding travel, he plans to attend the event in Monaco, but he also has a virtual option if needed. The CIFP award was inaugurated in 1965 and since then has only been awarded to heroic and notable humanitarian figures.

Betting on the Olympics and the SEA games are like a sport in itself, except fans are putting up money and placing bets on the competitions. Like any other sport, the playing field is often a factor of the outcome. For sports bettors, the preferred field is often online with sportsbooks that offer lines on the Olympics and SEA events.

Due to COVID-19, the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will likely be postponed until 2021 when the next SEA games are also scheduled. For now, most Filipino bettors are exploring other sports betting options, including Boxing, Baseball, and other international events such as Soccer.

When the Coronavirus is contained and the Olympic style games resume, most PH bettors will venture to offshore sportsbooks that are legal to use according to Philippine gambling laws. Domestic sportsbooks will also have betting lines, but online the odds are generally more favorable with tons of more options, including surfing competitions.
