One of the most popular sports in the Philippines is basketball. Whether high school, collegiate, professional, or pick-up, basketball is one of the most-watched and played sports in the country. It is estimated that 40 million Filipinos play basketball today.
Like basketball, betting is another popular activity on the islands. Of course, betting and basketball in the Philippines intersect with one another regularly in the country. And with an association as old as the Philippines’ National Collegiate Athletic Association, bets are constantly placed on the trusted league. Of course, to do so, Filipino gamblers must use an offshore sportsbook site, as domestic options do not allow punters to bet on local teams or to gamble over the Internet.
To help Filipinos that plan to place sports bets on NCAA basketball this season and beyond, this guide was created to navigate the logistics of sports betting in the Philippines. This page provides history, details, laws, and information relevant to the NCAA and betting.

Is It Legal To Bet On The NCAA In The Philippines?
Filipinos are free to make sports bets on NCAA basketball if done through legal channels. In this case, that means that betting action must be limited to legal offshore sportsbook sites.
Due to current laws in the Philippines, PAGCOR-regulated online casinos (aka POGOs) are off-limits to Filipino players, although brick-and-mortar casino access is fully permitted. Even there, however, sports betting on Philippine athletics is strictly forbidden.
To circumvent the lack of betting availability that PAGCOR’s online and physical casinos offer, Filipinos can use offshore sites. As long as the offshore casino is outside the jurisdiction of the Philippines and is regulated in its own home country, residents may use it without fear of breaking the law.

About the National Collegiate Athletic Association
Not to be confused with the NCAA of the United States (which you can also wager on at offshore Philippine sportsbooks!), the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the Philippines serves a similar purpose within college athletics but is unaffiliated with its American doppelganger.
Basketball was introduced to the Philippines in the early 1900s during the American occupation. For nearly as long as the sport has been in the country, the National Collegiate Athletic Association has been operating in the Philippines to facilitate college athletics. The NCAA was formed in 1924 and is the oldest athletic association in the islands.
The NCAA saw a sizable amount of growth in the 1950s, and after some issues between the 1960s and 1980s, the league expanded again in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, 10 Metro Manila teams make up the NCAA.

What Is The NCAA Tournament Format?
Teams in the NCAA play an 18-game regular season before seeds are set for the tournament, which takes place during the July-November semester. The event is split into two categories: Seniors and Juniors. Should the same school win both tournaments, they will have won the “double championship.”
The current NCAA tournament format is structured around a double-elimination process where each school plays each other school twice. The four teams with the best records make it to the semifinals, which is called the Final Four. The top two clubs have a twice-to-beat advantage, and the finals are contested in a best-of-three series.

- Juniors: San Beda Red Cubs def. Lyceum Junior Pirates 2-1

NCAA Participation In The PCCL Tournament
While the NCAA has not had the same success as the UAAP in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) tournament, the association has done well for itself. Since the inception of the PCCL championship, the NCAA has produced four championships from three different teams: San Sebastian in 2011, San Beda in 2014 and 2015, and Lyceum in 2017.
However, the NCAA might have a harder time competing for PCCL championship since the format change in 2018. Since then, the UAAP and NCAA teams have their own separate brackets with only one winner coming out between the two to face one of the smaller schools in the final.
If the UAAP continues their dominance, the NCAA could see a drought in the coming years. Our guide to betting on the UAAP goes into more detail about the PCCL tournament and how you can bet on the PCCL or the UAAP league.
